Speaker Biographies: Prof Marc Braem
Prof Braem is the Honorary President of the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and was responsible for the development of the dental sleep medicine accreditation program that works in liaison with national dental sleep medicine societies in Europe. He qualified as a dentist in 1975 and he defended his PhD in 1980. He is currently a full professor in the University of Antwerp.
He is recognised internationally as a leading expert on dental sleep medicine, and he has published extensively in peer reviewed journals on this subject.
In 2017 Prof Braem received the “Pierre Robin Award” from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Dr Paul Reaney
Paul is a dentist with a special interest in orthodontics and has successfully incorporated a Dental Sleep Medicine Clinic, Snoring SolutionsNI, within his general practice. He gained accreditation by examination with the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is currently a committee member of the Irish Society of Dental Sleep Medicine.
His implementation of digital technology in Dental Sleep Medicine has been recognised by winning:
Best Digital Practice 2019 International Digital Dentistry Awards
Best High Technology Practice category in the 2020 and 2022 Irish Dental Awards.

Dr Brian Kent
Dr Kent is a consultant respiratory and sleep physician. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, he completed specialist training in respiratory medicine in Dublin, before undertaking a three-year Health Research Board-funded Research Training Fellowship in Sleep Medicine.
Following this, he was appointed as a consultant in respiratory and sleep medicine in Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London in 2013. Over the
following six years, he helped build one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary sleep services, and also established one of the largest severe asthma services in the UK, before returning to St James’s Hospital in 2019.
Dr Kent’s clinical practice encompasses the full range of physical sleep disorders, from obstructive sleep apnoea to parasomnia to narcolepsy, and the care of people with difficult and severe asthma, alongside other respiratory diseases.

Peter holds the ResMed Chair in Sleep Medicine at the University of Sydney, where he leads the Sleep Research Theme within the multidisciplinary Charles Perkins Centre. He is an active clinician researcher with 28 years’ experience in the fields of respiratory and sleep medicine. His thematic research has focused on the pathophysiology of sleep-disordered breathing and novel approaches to therapy, particularly with oral appliances. He has received international awards for his academic contributions to the sleep field. He is a former President of the Australasian Sleep Association, and a former board member of the Sleep Health Foundation (Australia).

DENTAL MANAGEMENT OF SNORING AND OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNOEA (OSA)
Sleep Physicians will be giving a general overview of OSA, Snoring and the relationship between the two conditions, treatments they can offer, where they see oral appliances benefitting the patient (non-apnoeic, mild-mod OSA, CPAP non-compliant), local referral pathways and willingness to accept referrals after BSDSM /ISDSM pre-treatment screening.
We will also give guidance on the role of the GDP in the screening of snoring patients for OSA and the referral pathway for diagnosis and treatment as part of a multidisciplinary team in the treatment of these patients.
